Bank responds to letter on Internet security published in The Age and SMH.
3 March 2004

Mr Kumria's solution (Tighten the Net, 2 March) to "deny customers access" to Internet banking unless they upgrade their browser to IE 6.0 misses the point in relation to online banking security, and fails to take into account the impact on our customers of forcing them into a specific browser.

Internet banking security is not compromised by the brand or version of browser used by our customers, the issue is really about our customers regularly patching their systems and upgrading their virus detection and firewall to protect themselves. In fact, the Bank has a long history of advising its customers and the broader community about managing online security risks as detailed on the NetBank homepage and on its main website.

Mr McKinnon is correct in stating that the Commonwealth Bank regards security as its primary concern.
