Cooloola Noosa Life Education Association
The Life Education program was established to teach primary school children to make smart life choices for a healthy, drug-free future. The Cooloola Noosa branch has received a Local Grant to fund the production of teaching aids for the 2008 Life Education program, which will reach 9,000 students.
Cystic Fibrosis Queensland
Cystic Fibrosis Queensland (CFQ) has received a Local Grant to fund an essential element of the ‘Cystic Fibrosis Health Management Plan’, which will see 66 children and their families benefit from a physical activity subsidy. Physical activity helps people with cystic fibrosis to keep their lungs clear, maintain a healthy level of fitness, increase immunity and fight off infection. The subsidy can be used for activities such as dancing lessons or equipment such as a trampoline or even running shoes.
Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association Australia Queensland
Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association (DebRA) provides ongoing support and information for individuals, families and professionals living and working with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare genetic skin condition that results in continuous blisters and skin trauma. DebRA has received a Local Grant to fund a two-day course, ‘Guided Imagery – Pain Management Project for People with EB’. This course will teach effective pain management skills to people living with EB, their parents, carers and allied health professionals.
Muscular Dystrophy Association of Queensland Inc.
The Muscular Dystrophy Association works to improve the quality of life of people affected by muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular disorders. The association has received a Local Grant to set up a short-term electric bed loan service. These adjustable beds enable a child to use a remote control to adjust the bed to a position of comfort, allowing them to maintain their own blood flow and reduce bed sores.
Royal Children's Hospital Foundation
The Royal Children's Hospital Foundation (RCHF) has been awarded a Local Grant to extend their loaned trolley service at the Townsville Hospital Children's Ward. Around 10,000 children stay at the ward each year, and the trolley provides fun activities to keep them busy. It offers portable DVD players, games, toys, colouring books and pencils.
Talera Child and Family Therapy Centre
A program of Queensland Baptist Care (QBC), the Talera Child and Family Therapy Centre in Brisbane provides a therapeutic service for children, adolescents and their families who have been affected by, or are at risk of, abuse and violence. The centre will use their Local Grant to enhance the ‘Talera Centre Child Therapy Program’ which provides a positive therapy experience for children. The enhancements will include playground equipment, a new cubby and a new basketball area.
The Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland
The Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland is dedicated to helping children, teenagers and adults with leukaemia and other related blood disorders. The foundation has been awarded a Local Grant to build an internet room and a library of games, puzzles, books and movies at their village in South Brisbane.
Zoe's Place Children's Hospice
Zoe's Place Children's Hospice provides paediatric palliative care and support services to families in Queensland who have a child with a life threatening illness. Zoe's Place Children's Hospice will use their Local Grant to purchase new equipment that will improve the comfort and quality of care provided to these children and their families.
