NSW recipients

 

Barnardos
Barnardos provides a range of services including family support, community development programs, mentoring, youth programs and child care. They have received a Local Grant for their ‘Aboriginal Child and Family Resource Project’, which will be conducted in Aboriginal communities in North Wollongong, Warrawong and Shellharbour. The program will educate young parents on the importance of early childhood learning and development, bringing families into contact with nurses, playgroups, preschool and family support groups.

Breakaway
Breakaway provides respite camps that enhance the lives of people with disabilities by providing them with a fun break from their everyday routines. Breakaway will use their Local Grant to hold a camp for children with high medical needs and their families. The camp will give children the chance to interact with other children in a similar situation and provide an environment where families can enjoy a respite break. 

Centre Against Child Sexual Assault (Lismore Neighbourhood Centre Inc.)
The Centre Against Child Sexual Assault (CACSA) is a non-government organisation that provides counselling to children and young people who have been sexually assaulted and their non-offending family members. CACSA have received a Local Grant for the program ‘Love Bites’, an early intervention education program for high school students. Love Bites will educate students about sexual assault and domestic violence, and teach them how to build positive relationships.

Down Syndrome New South Wales
Down Syndrome New South Wales has been awarded a Local Grant for their project 'Up, Up and Away – Training the Life Coaches’, a mentoring initiative for young people with Down syndrome. The grant will provide team coaches with the necessary skills and information required to work more effectively with people with Down syndrome, their families and service providers. 

Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association Australia
Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association (DebRA) provides ongoing support and information for individuals, families and professionals living and working with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare genetic skin condition that results in continuous blisters and skin trauma. DebRA has received a Local Grant to fund a two-day course, ‘Guided Imagery – Pain Management Project for People with EB’. This course will teach effective pain management skills to people living with EB, their parents, carers and allied health professionals.   

Early Education Inc.
Early Education (EarlyEd) is a non-government and non-profit early childhood intervention service that assists children who have a diagnosed disability or difficulties in physical, intellectual or emotional behaviour. There is currently a waiting list for speech pathology services and to address this, EarlyEd will use their Local Grant to provide education sessions that will give parents practical strategies to enhance their child’s communication skills and improve everyday interactions.

Home-Start National Inc.
Home-Start National is a volunteer home visiting service that supports families of children with a disability who are experiencing stress or difficulties in their parenting role. Home-Start will use their Local Grant to provide training for coordinators and volunteers who work on the Home-Start Disabilities Project. The project provides help with transport, therapy and information, and links families who are caring for a child with a disability into the wider community network.

Learning Links
Learning Links is a non-profit organisation that educates and counsels children with learning disabilities and their families. Learning Links will use their Local Grant for the ‘Acute Needs Fund’. The fund will allow the organisation to provide education, therapy and counselling programs at no cost to children with substantial learning disabilities, whose families are facing difficult financial circumstances.

Life Changing Experiences Foundation Ltd
The Life Changing Experiences Foundation has received a Local Grant to fund their 12-month mentoring project, the ‘SISTER2sister Program’. The program takes in up to 50 ‘at risk’ female youths each year from Sydney’s metropolitan area. Each participant is assigned a ‘Big Sister’ mentor, who provides support, guidance and advice, and acts as a positive role model during the 12-month period. The program teaches participants essential life skills that will develop self-esteem and boost confidence. 

Shine for Kids Cooperative Limited
Shine for Kids provides early intervention services for the children of prisoners in New South Wales. Their Local Grant will be used to fund the ‘Keeping Them at School Initiative’, an early intervention program for children of prisoners in the Bathurst Correctional Complex. The program aims to keep children engaged at school by building their literacy and numeracy skills through assisted after-school education and support.

Spectrum Employment Services Co-operative
Spectrum Employment Services provides training, education and employment opportunities for the unemployed and disadvantaged. Spectrum has received a Local Grant for the ‘Stepping Stones – Horticulture Work Experience Program for At Risk Youth’. This program will provide Year 9 and 10 students who are at risk of leaving school with work experience in the horticulture industry, giving them an opportunity to pursue a pathway to accredited training and a career in the landscaping industry.

St Gabriel's School for Hearing Impaired Children
St Gabriel's School for Hearing Impaired Children provides an Auditory Verbal Therapy, Early Intervention Program for hearing impaired children. St Gabriel's have received a Local Grant for their 'Hear the Children Early Intervention Program’ that teaches hearing impaired babies and children, who are fitted with hearing aids and/or cochlear implants, to listen and speak. This program also provides parents with relevant information and the skills needed to teach their hearing impaired child.

Technical Aid to the Disabled
Technical Aid to the Disabled provides innovative custom-designed aids to children that have disabilities. Aid to the Disabled has received a Local Grant to fund the supply of custom-designed aids such as special seating for schools, modified walking frames and modified bikes. These aids will allow children with disabilities from low-income families to enjoy a better quality of life.

The Shack Youth Outreach
The Shack is a safe and supervised centre where teenagers interact, enjoy social and recreational activities, and receive counselling, referrals and support. The centre runs workshops on drugs and alcohol, and assists young people in becoming constructive members of the community. The Shack will use their Local Grant to fund ‘Operation Kickstart’, a project that will provide disadvantaged youth with basic job training and essential life skills.
